Lois Elna West Elkins was the third of twelve born on November 24, 1913. She knew her older sister, Dot, would never leave home for college with no other girl to help raise the children, so she dropped out of school after the eighth
grade and insisted that Dot continue her education. She married Toy Norman Elkins on November 8, 1932. It is popularly thought that Toy was the "funniest man in north Louisiana." The had a son on April 6, 1933, Ronnie Lane Elkins. When Toy died on March 22, 1962, Ronnie promised his father that he would never leave his mother. Ronnie remained at her side until the day she died at 99 years of age -- January 27, 2013.
